The 60-year-old former French national goalkeeper played for Sochaux, Auxerre and Paris Saint-Germain during his career while accumulating 50 national team caps and winning the 1984 European Championships.

A statement on the Lyon official website revealed that Bats is heading of to Canada with former Lyon coach Remi Garde to head up the goalkeeping department at Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact.

And while his contract in Ligue 1 runs until June, he will depart the club in December.

The statement read: "Olympique Lyonnais warmly thank Joel Bats for everything he has brought to the club, both on a sporting and on a human level, particularly to several generations of goalkeepers over 17 years."
